By the Numbers
Dino: Italian Love Songs is Dean Martin working entirely as an interpreter. Every track is a pre-existing Italian or Italian-American standard, from Neapolitan songs like 'O Sole Mio' and 'Torna a Surriento' to Italian film and pop hits like 'Arrivederci Roma' and 'Non Dimenticar,' and Martin has no writing credit anywhere on the record. Several songs carry a split authorship trail: an Italian composer and lyricist on the original, then separate American writers credited for the English adaptation actually registered on this release, as with 'Just Say I Love Her' (Rodolfo Falvo's original 'Dicitencello Vuie' adapted for Capitol by Jack Val, Jimmy Dale, Martin Kalmanoff, and Sam Ward) and 'Non Dimenticar' (P.G. Redi and Michele Galdieri's original, Shelly Dobbins' English lyric). Where a credited writer used a professional name with a documented legal name, the legal name appears in the composer column: Renato Rascel as Renato Ranucci, Al Stillman as Albert Irving Silverman, Sunny Skylar as Selig Shaftel, Danny Di Minno as Daniel Gaetano DiMinno, and Johnny Farrow as John Joseph Faracchio Jr. The one re-recording, 'Return to Me,' revisits Martin's own 1958 hit rather than any new original material, reinforcing that this album's identity rests entirely on Martin's voice and Gus Levene's arrangements, not on Martin's pen.
Dino: Italian Love Songs is the studio album Dean Martin recorded for Capitol Records at 1750 N. Vine Street in Hollywood on September 6-8, 1961, released February 5, 1962. Producer Dave Cavanaugh and arranger-conductor Gus Levene built the record around a full orchestra of strings, accordion, mandolin, and harp behind Martin's baritone. The twelve tracks are Italian and Italian-American standards and film songs, including 'Arrivederci Roma,' 'Return to Me (Ritorna a Me),' and 'There's No Tomorrow,' itself adapted from 'O Sole Mio.' Martin re-recorded his own 1958 hit 'Return to Me' for the set rather than reusing the earlier single master. The album reached number 73 on the Billboard 200, Martin's first appearance on the American pop albums chart, and it carries no original Martin compositions, only interpretations of existing Italian and Italian-American songs.
