By the Numbers
This Time I'm Swingin'! carries no Dean Martin songwriting credits at all. Every one of the twelve songs comes from an outside pen or writing team, ranging from Cole Porter and the Lerner-Loewe partnership to Tin Pan Alley figures like Clarence Gaskill, Jimmy McHugh, and Sam H. Stept. Several of the credited names are stage or shortened names rather than legal ones: Jimmy Van Heusen was born Edward Chester Babcock, Sammy Cahn was born Samuel Cohen, Jule Styne was born Julius Kerwin Stein, Betty Comden was born Basya Cohen, and Larry Stock was born Lazarus Goldberger, among others reflected in the composer credits. Martin's authorship on this record is entirely as vocalist; Nelson Riddle's arranging and conducting shapes the band sound, while Lee Gillette produced the sessions for Capitol. The album is a pure interpreter's record alongside Martin's other Riddle-arranged standards albums of the same period.
This Time I'm Swingin'! is a studio album by Dean Martin, recorded in May 1960 at Capitol Recording Studio in Hollywood and released by Capitol Records on October 3, 1960. Arranger and conductor Nelson Riddle leads a big band behind Martin's baritone across twelve standards drawn from Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, and the movies. The program moves between up-tempo swing readings like 'You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You' and 'Just in Time' and ballads such as Cole Porter's 'True Love' and the Lerner and Loewe pair 'On the Street Where You Live' and 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face.' Every track is a cover; Martin does not write any of the material, and his role throughout is as interpreter of songs already decades old by 1960. The album reached number 18 on the UK Albums Chart and was later rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by AllMusic as one of the strongest records of Martin's Capitol years. A 2005 reissue added bonus tracks recorded between 1949 and 1951, though the original twelve-song program remains the definitive version.
