By the Numbers
Dream with Dean is a pure interpreter's record. Every track is a pre-rock standard from the 1920s through the 1940s, and Martin wrote none of it; the credits belong to Tin Pan Alley and film songwriters like Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Johnny Mercer, and Charlie Chaplin. The one original-era exception is 'Everybody Loves Somebody,' co-written by Martin's own pianist Ken Lane with Sam Coslow and Irving Taylor, recorded here in its first, quartet-backed version before Martin cut the string-laden single take that made it a number-one hit. The small combo behind him on every track, rather than a credited arranger or big band, is what sets this album apart from Martin's more heavily orchestrated Reprise records.
Dream with Dean is the eighteenth studio album by Dean Martin, released August 4, 1964 on Reprise Records under the full title Dream with Dean (The Intimate Dean Martin). Rather than a full orchestra, Martin recorded the set with a small quartet of Ken Lane on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Irving Cottler on drums, giving the record an after-hours, lounge-room feel. The album leans entirely on pre-rock standards, from 'Blue Moon' and 'Fools Rush In' to 'Smile,' with Martin interpreting each song rather than writing any of the material. It also includes the first recording of 'Everybody Loves Somebody,' cut here with quartet accompaniment months before Martin re-recorded it with strings for the single release that became his second number one hit. The album reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 and drew warm reviews for its relaxed, late-night mood.
