By the Numbers
Cha Cha de Amor is a pure interpreter's record. Dean Martin wrote none of it; every track is an older standard or a Latin, French, or Yiddish-theater song fitted with a cha-cha arrangement, and the songwriting spans figures as different as Mitchell Parish, Gabriel Ruiz, and the Yiddish-stage team of Alexander Olshanetsky and Chaim Tauber. Several credited names are pen names rather than legal ones: Robert Mellin was born Israel Melnikoff, Sunny Skylar was born Selig Shaftel, Mitchell Parish was born Michael Hyman Pashelinsky, and Elsie Janis was born Elsie Bierbower. Nelson Riddle's arranging is the album's other authorial voice, reshaping a dozen decades-old love songs into a single cha-cha-driven suite. The record closes out Martin's Capitol tenure on a novelty of format rather than of songwriting, a singer's showcase built entirely from other writers' catalogs.
Cha Cha de Amor is Dean Martin's twelfth studio album for Capitol Records, recorded December 18-20, 1961 at the label's Hollywood studio and released November 5, 1962. It was his final Capitol session before he moved to Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records, and it sends off the Capitol years with a Latin turn: a set of pop standards and love songs arranged for an Afro-Cuban rhythm section. Nelson Riddle, Martin's longtime arranger, conducted the orchestra and shaped the cha-cha treatments, working with Capitol staff producer Dave Cavanaugh. The twelve songs pull from decades of Tin Pan Alley, Mexican, French, and Yiddish-theater songwriting, none of them written by Martin himself, recast in his relaxed baritone over the cha-cha groove. The record sold modestly next to Martin's bigger Capitol hits and drew mixed reviews, but it is a tidy bookend to his run at the label.
