By the Numbers
Shine is fully self-written, with Cyndi Lauper credited on all thirteen tracks of the full album version. She co-wrote the material with collaborators including Jan Pulsford and William Wittman. The record had a troubled history, finished around 2001 but delayed when its label folded, so it surfaced first as a 2002 US EP and later as a full album in Japan.
Cyndi Lauper's eighth studio album, initially released as a five-track EP in the United States through Oglio Records in 2002, then expanded to a thirteen-track full-length album for the Japanese market in 2004 through Epic Records. Co-produced by Lauper and William Wittman, with individual tracks co-written by Jan Pulsford, Rob Hyman, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Marcello Nines. Lauper holds a co-writing credit on all thirteen tracks, representing one of the highest authorship densities in her catalog. The limited US EP release came during a transitional period between major-label contracts, and the full LP never received a wide international release outside Japan. "Eventually," co-written with composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, marks an unusual cross-cultural collaboration, while the title track co-written with Wittman serves as the album's thematic centerpiece.
