By the Numbers
At Last is a covers album of jazz and pop standards, so none of its songs are Cyndi Lauper originals. She reinterprets material associated with artists such as Dionne Warwick, Edith Piaf, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone, recasting them in a jazz and torch-song style. The album showcases Lauper as an interpreter rather than a songwriter.
Cyndi Lauper's seventh studio album, released May 27, 2003, through Epic Records' Daylight imprint, and her first album composed entirely of jazz and pop standards. Co-produced with Russ Titelman, the album draws from the Great American Songbook and mid-20th century pop, including "At Last," "Walk On By," "Unchained Melody," "La Vie en Rose," and "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" written by Smokey Robinson. Tony Bennett appears as a guest vocalist on "Makin' Whoopee." None of the thirteen tracks feature Lauper as a songwriter, making At Last one of three albums in her catalog that scores 0% authorship, the first major departure from the original-songwriting direction established on her previous four albums. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and was praised for the clarity and restraint of Lauper's vocal performances on material far outside her new wave roots.
