She co-wrote throughout with collaborators such as Jan Pulsford, Allee Willis, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, tackling subjects like abortion, domestic violence, and racism. Cyndi Lauper's fourth studio album, released September 21, 1993, co-produced with Junior Vasquez and William Wittman. The album marked a deliberate political turn, addressing topics including abortion rights, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS. Lauper's principal co-writers were Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman of The Hooters, who contributed to five of the twelve tracks, alongside Allee Willis, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nicky Holland, Marv DePeyer, and Tom Gray. Lauper holds a writing credit on all twelve tracks, making Hat Full of Stars the first album in her catalog where she co-wrote the entire project. Club DJ Junior Vasquez produced several tracks, reflecting an early embrace of dance production that would resurface more fully on 2008's Bring Ya to the Brink.
