Data Insight

Arijit Singh wrote none of this album, and the paperwork shows exactly where he does sit. Amaal Mallik had the tune for "Sooraj Dooba Hain" three years before Roy existed, having written it for producers who turned it down; Bhushan Kumar picked it up for the film, and Kumaar wrote the words to the finished melody afterwards. Mallik then chose Singh for the male vocal because he wanted a voice not already worn out on party numbers, and Singh recorded it opposite Aditi Singh Sharma. That is the whole of Singh's involvement here: two takes on one song, out of seven tracks. Ankit Tiwari composed four of the others to lyrics by Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay and Sandeep Nath, and sang two of them himself, which is the rarer double credit on this record. "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan" came from Meet Bros Anjjan, the trio of brothers Manmeet Singh and Harmeet Singh with Anjjan Bhattacharya, who split from the pair later in 2015. The award ballots read the roles apart the same way the credits do: the composers took Best Music Director as a group, Kumaar was nominated for the lyrics, and Singh took Best Male Playback Singer, at the Filmfare Awards in 2016. Three people were honoured over one song, and only one of them opened his mouth.

Roy is the soundtrack to the 2015 Hindi film of the same name, released by T-Series on 14 January 2015. Three music directors divided the seven tracks: Amaal Mallik composed both versions of "Sooraj Dooba Hain", Meet Bros Anjjan composed "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan", and Ankit Tiwari composed the remaining four. Arijit Singh appears on the two "Sooraj Dooba Hain" tracks and nowhere else on the record. The three composers shared the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and Singh won Best Male Playback Singer for the song he sang.

Which songs on Roy does Arijit Singh sing?
Two of the seven tracks, and they are the same song twice. He sings "Sooraj Dooba Hain" with Aditi Singh Sharma, and the duet version of it that sits sixth on the album.
Did Arijit Singh write "Sooraj Dooba Hain"?
No. Amaal Mallik composed the music and Kumaar wrote the lyrics. Singh sang it, and the singing is what his award was for.
Who composed the Roy soundtrack?
Three music directors. Amaal Mallik composed "Sooraj Dooba Hain" and its duet version, Meet Bros Anjjan composed "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan", and Ankit Tiwari composed "Tu Hai Ki Nahi", "Boond Boond", "Yaara Re" and the unplugged version.
Who is Meet Bros Anjjan?
A trio: the Gwalior brothers Manmeet Singh and Harmeet Singh with Anjjan Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya left later in 2015 and the pair have recorded as Meet Bros since.

Does Ankit Tiwari sing on the album he composed?
On two tracks. He sings "Tu Hai Ki Nahi" and "Boond Boond", both of which he also composed, and he was nominated for Best Male Playback Singer against Singh for the first of them.
Data note: The Wikipedia soundtrack article orders the last four tracks as "Yaara Re", "Boond Boond", "Tu Hai Ki Nahi (Unplugged)", "Sooraj Dooba Hain". The T-Series CD on Discogs and the MusicBrainz digital release agree with each other against it, and their order is used here. "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan" credits Meet Bros Anjjan collectively for the vocal, so the group name stays in the performer column while the composer column carries the three members by name.
