Data Insight

Hindi film music splits authorship three ways, and this record is a clean example of the split. Pritam Chakraborty composed all six originals and appears on the Discogs sleeve as Music By. Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote every word of them, including the title lyric he drafted in the back seat of a car on the drive from Oshiwara to Khar and later called too predictable for its own rhymes. Arijit Singh wrote none of it. He is a playback singer, and on the title track, "Channa Mereya", "The Breakup Song", "Alizeh" and the two deluxe versions his name sits in the vocal line and nowhere in the writing credits. That did not stop the awards going his way. He took Best Male Playback Singer for the title song at the Filmfare Awards in 2017, on the same night Pritam won Best Music Director and Bhattacharya won Best Lyricist for "Channa Mereya". One wrinkle is worth naming: Discogs and MusicBrainz both credit Arijit Singh as a programmer on four tracks alongside Sunny M.R., which is a studio contribution rather than an authorship one, but more than a singer normally gets. The ninth track breaks the pattern outright. "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo" is a Pakistani geet written by Fayyaz Hashmi and composed by Sohail Rana, recreated here for Shilpa Rao, so Pritam sits on it as producer and not as composer. The album also drew a plagiarism charge, with the guitar riff of "Bulleya" traced to Papa Roach's "Last Resort".

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is the soundtrack to the 2016 Hindi romance of the same name, written and directed by Karan Johar. Music director Pritam Chakraborty composed the six original songs, and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote all of them. Sony Music India put out the standard six-track edition on 7 October 2016, three weeks ahead of the film, then added a deluxe edition on 11 November with two alternate versions and a recreated Urdu ghazal. Arijit Singh sings on six of the nine tracks and won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the title song.

Frequently Asked Questions Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Who composed the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil soundtrack?
Pritam Chakraborty, credited on the release as Pritam. It was his first soundtrack for Karan Johar as director, though he had already composed for Johar's company Dharma Productions on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for it.
Did Arijit Singh write any of these songs?
No. Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the lyrics to all six originals and Pritam composed the music. Arijit Singh is a playback singer, so his credit here is vocals, plus a programming credit on four tracks that Discogs and MusicBrainz both list.
How many tracks does Arijit Singh sing on?
Six of the nine. He sings the title track, "Channa Mereya", "Alizeh" and "The Breakup Song" on the standard edition, then "Bulleya (Reprise)" and "Channa Mereya (Unplugged)" on the deluxe. He does not appear on "Bulleya", "Cutiepie" or "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo".
What is the difference between the standard and deluxe editions?
The standard edition came out on 7 October 2016 with six original songs. The deluxe followed on 11 November with three more, two of them alternate versions of songs already on the record and one a recreation of an old Urdu ghazal.
Which songs were released as singles?
Three, all of them ahead of the album. The title track went out on 31 August 2016, "Bulleya" on 5 September and "Channa Mereya" on 14 September. The title track and "Channa Mereya" both reached number 1 on the Mirchi Top 20 countdown.
Who wrote "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo"?
Not Pritam. It is a geet by the Pakistani poet Fayyaz Hashmi, composed by Sohail Rana and made famous by Habib Wali Mohammad and Farida Khanum. Pritam recreated it for the deluxe edition with Shilpa Rao singing.
What awards did the soundtrack win?
Pritam won Best Music Director, Amitabh Bhattacharya won Best Lyricist for "Channa Mereya", Arijit Singh won Best Male Playback Singer for the title track, and Amit Mishra took the RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for "Bulleya", all at the Filmfare Awards in 2017. It also won Album of the Year at the Mirchi Music Awards.
