By the Numbers
Six tracks, three music directors, five lyricists, and Arijit Singh's name appears exactly once, in the singer column of track two. Amaal Mallik composed "Roke Na Ruke Naina" and Kumaar wrote its words; Singh recorded the vocal over an arrangement Mallik built with Aditya Dev, Ankur Mukherjee on guitar and Tapas Roy on mandolin and guzheng. Akhil Sachdeva is the outlier on this album because he did write his own: he composed "Humsafar", wrote its lyrics, and sang it with Mansheel Gujral, then cut a shorter version with Alia Bhatt. Tanishk Bagchi took the two remaining slots by two different routes, composing the title song to Shabbir Ahmed's lyrics and rebuilding Bappi Lahiri's "Tamma Tamma" from Thanedaar as "Tamma Tamma Again", which is why that track carries two composers and why Indeevar's 1990 lyric shares the credit with Badshah's new rap. The award ballots split the roles as cleanly as the liner notes do. Sachdeva was nominated as a singer for a song he had also written and composed, the three music directors were nominated together for the album, and Singh won for a performance of someone else's music set to someone else's words, at the Filmfare Awards in 2018. Playback singing is the job of being unmistakable inside work you did not author, and one track was enough.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the soundtrack to Shashank Khaitan's 2017 Hindi film of the same name, released by T-Series on 21 February 2017. Three music directors carry the six tracks: Amaal Mallik composed "Aashiq Surrender Hua" and "Roke Na Ruke Naina", Akhil Sachdeva composed both versions of "Humsafar", and Tanishk Bagchi composed the title song and rebuilt Bappi Lahiri's 1990 "Tamma Tamma" as "Tamma Tamma Again". Arijit Singh sings one track, "Roke Na Ruke Naina", and won Best Male Playback Singer for it at the Filmfare Awards in 2018.
