By the Numbers
The music on this album is the work of three named men rather than a brand. Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa compose together under the billing Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and the album credits them as its producers as well. The words are Gulzar's on all four songs, and on "Ae Watan" he built the lyric around a passage of Muhammad Iqbal's nazm "Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua", which the printed disc credits acknowledge by naming Allama Iqbal beside him on the female version, the one carrying the children's chorus. Order of work matters here. Mahadevan has said the lyrics came first and the melody followed, and that the trio wrote the tune for "Ae Watan" in Gulzar's living room in about five minutes. Arijit Singh wrote none of this. He sings two of the four tracks and appears in no other credit column, and the Filmfare Awards divided the recognition along exactly those lines, giving Best Lyricist to Gulzar for "Ae Watan" and Best Male Playback Singer to Singh for the same song, while the trio's own nomination for Best Music Director did not convert. A playback singer can win the biggest vocal prize of the year on a song he had no hand in writing, and on this album that is what happened.
Raazi is the soundtrack to Meghna Gulzar's 2018 Hindi spy film of the same name, composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and released by Zee Music Company in April 2018. Four songs run under nineteen minutes, cut at Purple Haze Studios in Mumbai on rabab, esraj, udu pots and frame drums instead of electronics, so the Kashmiri setting stays audible. Arijit Singh sings two of them, the male "Ae Watan" and the title track. "Ae Watan" won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer at the 64th Filmfare Awards.
