Data Insight

Every note on this record belongs to Ram Sampath and every word to one of three lyricists. Sampath composed all four songs and produced the album. Prashant Pandey wrote "Sajni" and "Beda Paar", Divy Nidhi Sharma wrote "Doubtwa", and Swanand Kirkire wrote "Dheeme Dheeme". Arijit Singh appears once, in the performer column of "Sajni", and in no writing credit anywhere on the album. That is the normal division of labour in Hindi film music, and the Filmfare Awards scored it the same way: Best Music Director to Sampath, Best Lyricist to Pandey for "Sajni", Best Male Playback Singer to Singh for that same song. Three prizes, three jobs, one track. Pandey got the work by messaging Sampath on social media rather than through a publisher, and walked away with half the album's lyrics. Singh's contribution was interpretive rather than authorial, and the film's makers were specific about what they wanted from it. Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan asked for a restrained, melancholic reading instead of his usual projection. Singh cut the vocal at his own studio and sent Sampath ten takes to choose from, which is a fair picture of what a playback singer actually controls: the take, not the song.

Laapataa Ladies is the soundtrack to Kiran Rao's 2024 Hindi film of the same name, composed by Ram Sampath and released by T-Series. Four songs run just over twelve minutes, and three of them stop short of three minutes because Sampath kept them inside the screenplay rather than letting them interrupt it. Arijit Singh sings one of the four, "Sajni", his first work with Sampath, and it won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer at the 70th Filmfare Awards. Sampath took Best Music Director at the same ceremony.

Frequently Asked Questions Laapataa Ladies

Which song on Laapataa Ladies does Arijit Singh sing?
One of the four, "Sajni", a two minute fifty solo placed second on the album. Sukhwinder Singh sings "Doubtwa", Shreya Ghoshal sings "Dheeme Dheeme" and Sona Mohapatra sings "Beda Paar".
Did Arijit Singh write "Sajni"?
No. Ram Sampath composed the music and Prashant Pandey wrote the lyrics. Singh is credited only as the singer, and the two awards for writing the song went to Sampath and Pandey.
Who composed the music for Laapataa Ladies?
Ram Sampath, who also wrote the background score and produced the album. He had worked with Aamir Khan Productions before on Delhi Belly and Talaash.
What did Laapataa Ladies win for its music?
At the 70th Filmfare Awards the album took Best Music Director for Sampath, Best Lyricist for Prashant Pandey for "Sajni", and Best Male Playback Singer for Arijit Singh for the same song. Sampath also won Best Music Director at the 25th IIFA Awards.
How long is the Laapataa Ladies soundtrack?
Twelve minutes and fourteen seconds across four songs. Only "Dheeme Dheeme" runs past three minutes; Sampath kept the rest short so the songs would not slow the screenplay.
Data note: The Wikipedia soundtrack article titles track three "Dheeme Dheeme 1.0"; the T-Series release on Discogs and the MusicBrainz release both title it "Dheeme Dheeme", and the release form is used here. The lyricist of "Doubtwa" is spelled "Divy Nidhi Sharma" on the Discogs credits and in the soundtrack article, and "Divyanidhi Sharma" in the film article; the Discogs spelling is used.
