Data Insight

Pritam Chakraborty wrote the music for all ten tracks and Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the words for all ten. The Zee Music Company release credits the album to those two names and no one else on the writing side, and the track table carries one blanket lyric line covering the whole record. Arijit Singh appears in neither column. What he has is the performer line on four tracks and, on the title track, a set of technical credits that are unusual for him: the label release lists him for programming, arranging and harmonium next to Sunny M.R. and Jim Satya. That is studio work on someone else's song, not authorship of it, and the difference matters when reading a Hindi film credit list. The awards sorted the same three jobs into three boxes. At the Filmfare ceremony held in February 2020, Pritam took a Best Music Director nomination, Bhattacharya a Best Lyricist nomination for "Kalank", and Singh the win for Best Male Playback Singer on that identical song. One track, judged three times, and a different person collected each time.

Kalank is the soundtrack to Abhishek Varman's 2019 Hindi film of the same name, put out by Zee Music Company after five of its songs had already gone to radio and streaming as singles. Music director Pritam Chakraborty composed all ten tracks and Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote every lyric on the record. Arijit Singh sings four of the ten, among them the title track, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. The other six go to Shreya Ghoshal, Jonita Gandhi, and the trio of Antara Mitra, Javed Ali and Tushar Joshi.

Frequently Asked Questions Kalank

Which Kalank songs does Arijit Singh sing?
Four of the ten tracks. He sings "First Class" with Neeti Mohan, the solo title track, the duet version of the title track with Shilpa Rao, and the bonus version of the title track, also with Shilpa Rao.
Did Arijit Singh write the song "Kalank"?
No. Pritam Chakraborty composed it and Amitabh Bhattacharya wrote the lyrics. Singh sang it, and the label release also credits him for programming, arranging and harmonium on that track.
Who composed the Kalank soundtrack?
Pritam Chakraborty, working alone as music director across all ten tracks. The film's background score is separate and was written by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara.
What did Arijit Singh win for Kalank?
The Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer, for the title track. It was one of two wins the film took at that ceremony, the other going to Remo D'Souza for choreographing "Ghar More Pardesiya".
Who sings the rest of the album?
Shreya Ghoshal has three tracks, including "Tabaah Ho Gaye" and both versions of "Ghar More Pardesiya", with Vaishali Mhade joining her on the radio edit. Antara Mitra, Javed Ali and Tushar Joshi share the two versions of "Aira Gaira", and Jonita Gandhi sings "Rajvaadi Odhni".
Why is a film soundtrack listed under Arijit Singh?
He is a playback singer with no studio albums of his own. His recorded work lives on film soundtracks, so the album entries here are the films he sang for, and the per-track performer credits show which songs are his.
Data note: Release date differs by source: the Wikipedia soundtrack article and its JioSaavn citation give 14 April 2019, the film article says the album went out on 22 March 2019, and MusicBrainz dates the release 17 April 2019, the film's theatrical date. Vaishali Mhade sings on the radio edit of "Ghar More Pardesiya" only, per the Wikipedia song article and the soundtrack track table; the Discogs listing attaches her to both versions. Her name is spelled Vaishali Made on Discogs and MusicBrainz and Vaishali Mhade on Wikipedia and in the Filmfare nomination.
