By the Numbers
Three composers and four lyricists made this record, and Arijit Singh is neither. Mithoon, born Mithun Sharma, wrote both the music and the words for "Tum Hi Ho" and for the love theme, and he had cut "Tum Hi Ho" in Singh's voice two years before Mohit Suri heard it and asked for that singer on the whole film. Jeet Gannguli, born Chandrajeet Ganguly, composed six tracks to words by Irshad Kamil, apart from "Bhula Dena", which Sanjay Masoom wrote. Ankit Tiwari composed both versions of "Sunn Raha Hai" to lyrics by Sandeep Nath and sang the male one himself. Singh's name sits in the performer column of six tracks and nowhere else on the album. That split is the standard shape of Hindi film music: the music director owns the tune, the lyricist owns the text, and the playback singer owns the take. The Filmfare Awards recognised all three roles separately in the same year, giving Best Music Director to Gannguli, Mithoon and Tiwari together, Best Male Playback Singer to Singh, and a Best Lyrics nomination to Mithoon for the song he had written and composed.
Aashiqui 2 is the soundtrack to Mohit Suri's 2013 Hindi film of the same name, released by T-Series on 3 April 2013. Three music directors split the eleven tracks: Jeet Gannguli composed six, Mithoon three, and Ankit Tiwari the two versions of "Sunn Raha Hai". Arijit Singh sings six of them, among them "Tum Hi Ho", which Mithoon had already recorded in Singh's voice two years before the film needed a title song. The three composers shared the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, and Singh won Best Male Playback Singer.
