Data Insight

December's Children (And Everybody's) is a US compilation-style album assembled from UK tracks, B-sides, and unreleased recordings, and roughly half its dozen songs are still covers of Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Arthur Alexander, and others. Its weight comes from the originals: 'Get Off of My Cloud,' a Jagger/Richards number one, and 'As Tears Go By,' the ballad they wrote that Marianne Faithfull recorded first. The album shows the partnership stretching beyond hard R&B into more reflective, melodic territory. Producer Andrew Loog Oldham oversaw the project, with Brian Jones adding electric, acoustic, and slide guitar plus harmonica and organ.

A US-exclusive album released December 4, 1965 on London Records. Compiled from recent UK singles and EP tracks alongside some album material, including 'Get Off of My Cloud' and 'As Tears Go By.' Features a mix of Jagger-Richards originals and covers. Not conceived as a unified album by the band.

Frequently Asked Questions December's Children (And Everybody's)

Is December's Children mostly originals or covers?
It is split roughly in half. About half the twelve tracks are covers of artists like Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Arthur Alexander, while the rest are Jagger/Richards originals and band recordings. The album was assembled for the US market from UK material, B-sides, and unreleased takes.
What are the best-known songs on December's Children?
The standout tracks are 'Get Off of My Cloud,' which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and 'As Tears Go By.' Both are Jagger/Richards compositions. They represent the band's strengthening original songwriting alongside the album's covers.
Who originally recorded As Tears Go By?
'As Tears Go By' was written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Andrew Loog Oldham, and was first recorded by Marianne Faithfull in 1964. The Rolling Stones' own version on December's Children reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was one of the earliest Jagger/Richards compositions to become a hit for another artist.
How did Get Off of My Cloud chart?
'Get Off of My Cloud' reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the UK Singles Chart in late 1965. The Jagger/Richards song was conceived as a follow-up to 'Satisfaction.' It became the band's second US number one single.
Why does December's Children mix old and new recordings?
London Records assembled the album for the US market using a combination of UK album tracks, single B-sides, and unreleased recordings spanning 1963 to 1965. This was common practice for US editions of British albums at the time. As a result the recording dates vary widely across the tracklist.
What did Brian Jones play on December's Children?
Brian Jones contributed electric, acoustic, and slide guitar, along with harmonica, organ, and backing vocals across the tracks. His range of instruments reflected his role as the band's most versatile instrumentalist. Producer Andrew Loog Oldham oversaw the recordings.
How did December's Children perform on the charts?
The album reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by the RIAA for 500,000 copies. It extended the band's run of successful US releases in 1965. The hit single 'Get Off of My Cloud' helped drive sales.
