The Soul Cages is fully self-written, a concept album in which Sting worked through grief over his father's death. Every song is his own, anchored by the hit "All This Time" and the title track, which won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Produced by Hugh Padgham, the album is entirely Sting's own work.
The Soul Cages arrived on A&M on 21 January 1991 after several years of writer's block that followed the death of Sting's father, and it is built around that loss, with sailing and the Newcastle shipyards running through it. Hugh Padgham produced, and the record was mixed in QSound for a three-dimensional stereo effect. Four singles came off it, 'All This Time' reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and the title track won the first Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1992. Sting wrote all nine tracks himself.
