By the Numbers
If on a Winter's Night... is a seasonal album mostly drawn from traditional winter songs, carols, madrigals, and hymns, so most of its material was written by others. Sting contributes a handful of original compositions among the centuries-old folk and religious pieces. Produced with Robert Sadin, it is largely an interpretive collection rather than a self-written album.
If on a Winter's Night... came out on Deutsche Grammophon on 26 October 2009, a collection of winter and Christmas material mostly written by other hands: folk songs, madrigals and religious hymns going back centuries, alongside a handful of Sting originals and a reworked 'The Hounds of Winter' from Mercury Falling. Robert Sadin produced it with him, and dozens of jazz, folk and classical players pass through the sessions. It reached number six on the Billboard 200 and number one on Billboard's classical chart, and it is certified gold in the US.
