Sting wrote ten of the eleven tracks alone; 'La Belle Dame sans regrets,' sung in French, he wrote with his guitarist Dominic Miller. Hugh Padgham produced for the third album running. The phrase in the title is the first and last lyric heard on the record, written for 'The Hounds of Winter' before anything else, and Sting kept it because the album darts between soul, country, gospel and Latin pop.
Mercury Falling was released on A&M on 4 March 1996, recorded at Lake House in Wiltshire with Hugh Padgham and a band built around Dominic Miller, Kenny Kirkland, Vinnie Colaiuta and Branford Marsalis. It reached the top ten in eighteen countries, though none of its four singles broke through everywhere; 'Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot' and 'You Still Touch Me' did best, both going top ten in Canada. The record leans harder on soul and country than anything Sting had made before. It is platinum in the US, UK and Canada and drew two Grammy nominations in 1997.
