Sting wrote eight of the ten tracks alone. Producer Kipper shares 'A Thousand Years' and Cheb Rabah shares 'Desert Rose,' the two places where the album's electronic and North African elements are written into the song rather than arranged over it. Kipper's production is the other change: after three albums with Hugh Padgham, Sting handed the desk to a programmer, and the writing follows the sound outward into world and dance textures.
Brand New Day came out on A&M on 27 September 1999 and was treated as a comeback, peaking at number nine on the Billboard 200 and selling over 3.5 million copies in the US. Sting set aside Hugh Padgham and co-produced with Kipper across studios in Italy, Paris, London and New York. 'Desert Rose,' sung with the Algerian rai singer Cheb Mami, carried the record, and Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on the title track. It won Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards.
