Shaman extends the all-star guest formula of Supernatural, again pairing Carlos Santana's guitar with a rotating cast of outside vocalists, songwriters, and producers rather than a single creative voice. The lead single 'The Game of Love' with Michelle Branch won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, and it was written by Gregg Alexander and Rick Nowels, not by the band itself. Producers and writers shift track to track across contributors such as Kike Santander, Cory Rooney, and others, so the record reads as a producer-driven collection. The follow-up single 'Why Don't You & I' was written by Chad Kroeger, who sang the original album version before Alex Band re-recorded the vocal for the single.
Shaman is the nineteenth studio album by Santana, released in 2002 on Arista Records as the direct follow-up to Supernatural. The album employed the same collaborative guest-vocalist formula, featuring Michelle Branch, Seal, Alejandro Sanz, Musiq, and others, and while it failed to replicate Supernatural's record-breaking commercial performance, it still sold over 10 million copies worldwide. "The Game of Love," featuring Michelle Branch and written by Rick Nowels and Gregg Alexander, became a substantial pop hit and won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Carlos Santana's guitar work remained the album's emotional core, particularly on instrumentals and quieter passages where his tone communicated more than any vocal could. Shaman demonstrated that Supernatural's audience was real and durable, even if lightning was not going to strike twice.
