Data Insight

Santana III, released in 1971, is the last studio album made by the classic Woodstock-era lineup of Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, David Brown, Michael Shrieve, José Areas and Mike Carabello, with 16-year-old Neal Schon joining on second guitar. Most of the record is band-written, with the longer tracks like "Batuka," "Toussaint L'Ouverture" and "Guajira" credited collectively to the group rather than to any single member. The two covers, "Jungle Strut" and "Para Los Rumberos," come from saxophonist Gene Ammons and Latin bandleader Tito Puente respectively, anchoring the album's jazz and Afro-Cuban roots. "Everybody's Everything," co-written by Carlos Santana with Milton Brown and Tyrone Moss, became the album's biggest single.

Santana III is the third studio album by Santana, released in 1971 on Columbia Records and the last record featuring the original classic lineup with Gregg Rolie, David Brown, Michael Carabello, and Michael Shrieve. The album also introduced guitarist Neal Schon, just 17 years old at the time, who would later co-found Journey. "Everybody's Everything," co-written by Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, and Milton Brown, became a Top 20 pop hit and distilled the band's energy into one of their most radio-friendly performances. "Toussaint L'Ouverture" and "Guajira" showcased the band's improvisational instrumental strength, while "No One to Depend On," written by Coke Escovedo and Rico Reyes, brought a raw edge to the collection. Santana III completed a remarkable three-album run that established Latin rock as a permanent genre within American popular music.
