Californication marked John Frusciante's return to Red Hot Chili Peppers after his departure following Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and every song is credited to all four members: Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Frusciante, and Chad Smith. Rick Rubin produced again, and Frusciante's restrained, melodic guitar work reshaped the band's sound toward more song-focused arrangements. The reunited lineup wrote collaboratively, with Kiedis's lyrics laid over grooves and melodies developed by the full band. The album became one of their biggest commercial successes and signaled the creative rebirth of the classic lineup.
Reuniting with John Frusciante, this album marked a dramatic creative resurgence and became the band's best-selling record with over 15 million copies sold. Produced again by Rick Rubin.
