Brian Warner, as Marilyn Manson, wrote the lyrics while all band members contributed to the compositions, including bassist Twiggy Ramirez, guitarist John 5, and keyboardist Madonna Wayne Gacy. Manson produced the record with Dave Sardy, with Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb handling programming and pre-production editing, returning the band to an industrial metal sound after the glam direction of Mechanical Animals. The album is a rock-opera concept record and the final installment of the trilogy, though its story chronologically begins the narrative continued by Mechanical Animals and Antichrist Superstar.
Marilyn Manson's fourth album, self-produced with Sean Beavan and John 5. A concept album exploring themes of religion, media, and celebrity martyrdom, it serves as a prequel to Antichrist Superstar within the band's conceptual trilogy. Released in the wake of controversy following the Columbine shootings.
