Data Insight

Victim of Love is the rare Elton John album he did not write at all. Produced by disco architect Pete Bellotte, it is a set of covers and Bellotte-led originals, including a disco take on Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode, with John contributing only vocals and neither writing the songs nor playing keyboards.

Victim of Love is the thirteenth studio album by Elton John, released in October 1979 on Rocket Records and produced by Pete Bellotte. The album was Elton John's controversial and largely unsuccessful attempt to ride the wave of late-1970s disco, featuring entirely covers of dance tracks arranged by Bellotte, who had previously produced Donna Summer. Critics were generally unkind, viewing the project as a commercial capitulation that squandered Elton's singular songwriting gifts, and Bernie Taupin was not involved in any aspect of the record. The album performed poorly by Elton's standards, selling relatively few copies and generating little lasting interest beyond its place in his discography as an experiment that failed. Victim of Love is best understood as a cautionary tale about an artist temporarily losing his way in pursuit of a genre that didn't suit his strengths.
