Data Insight

Leather Jackets is widely regarded as Elton John's weakest album, and he later called it the worst thing he ever released. He composed the music with lyrics mostly by Bernie Taupin and Gary Osborne, and Cher co-wrote Don't Trust That Woman under the pseudonym Lady Choc Ice.

Leather Jackets is the twentieth studio album by Elton John, released in November 1986 on Rocket Records and produced by Gus Dudgeon. The album is widely considered the nadir of Elton's recording career, released at a time when his voice had deteriorated severely due to throat nodules and his personal life was in crisis from drug and alcohol abuse. The production is slick to the point of sterility, and Taupin's lyrics, while professionally accomplished, lacked the fire of their best collaborative work. Critical reception was poor and commercial performance was the weakest of Elton's career since the early 1970s. Leather Jackets is significant primarily as the low point before a remarkable personal and artistic recovery, and Elton himself has spoken candidly about the terrible circumstances under which it was recorded.
