Caribou was recorded quickly between tour dates, with Elton John composing the music and Bernie Taupin writing the lyrics as usual. Despite the rushed sessions it produced two of his biggest singles, The Bitch Is Back and the ballad Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.

Caribou is the eighth studio album by Elton John, released in June 1974 on DJM Records and produced by Gus Dudgeon. Recorded in just five days at Caribou Ranch in Colorado between legs of an extensive tour, the album was the most hastily assembled of Elton's early career, and critics noted the relative lack of polish compared to his previous records. Despite mixed reviews, the album debuted at number one in both the UK and the United States on the strength of Elton's commercial dominance and produced the major hits 'The Bitch Is Back' and 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me,' the latter featuring a backing vocal from Brian May of Queen. The album's rawness was also part of its appeal, capturing the energy of a working band in creative overdrive. Caribou is a minor entry in Elton's 1970s run but still contains essential songs from one of rock's most prolific creative periods.
