Sleeping with the Past was conceived as a tribute to the classic soul and R&B records Elton John and Bernie Taupin grew up on, with John on music and Taupin on lyrics throughout. It became his best-selling album of the 1980s and gave him his first UK solo number-one single with Sacrifice.

Sleeping with the Past is the twenty-second studio album by Elton John, released in September 1989 on Rocket Records and produced by Chris Thomas. The album is a nostalgic tribute to the soul and R&B music of the 1950s and 1960s that had inspired Elton's own musical development, with each song channeling a different classic era sound. The ballad 'Sacrifice' became Elton John's first-ever solo UK number-one single when it was re-released in 1990, an extraordinary milestone given his enormous commercial history in his home country. The album reached number one in the UK and demonstrated that Elton's voice, fully recovered from the nodule surgery, could deliver sustained emotional performances of great beauty. Sleeping with the Past is one of Elton's most underrated late-career albums, a warm and loving homage to the music that made him.
