Data Insight

The One was Elton John's first album recorded after he got sober, and he composed the music with Bernie Taupin writing the lyrics on all songs except Runaway Train, co-written with Olle Romö. It became his biggest US seller since the 1970s, led by the title-track ballad.

The One is the twenty-third studio album by Elton John, released in June 1992 on Rocket Records and produced by Chris Thomas. The album was a significant commercial comeback in the United States, reaching number eight on the Billboard 200 and spawning the title-track ballad that became one of his most beloved songs of the decade. Written partly in response to the AIDS crisis (Elton had become deeply involved in AIDS advocacy following the death of his friend Ryan White), the album carries a gravity and emotional weight that distinguishes it from his more commercially oriented 1980s work. 'The Last Song,' a devastating account of a father reconnecting with his dying son, became particularly powerful in the context of the AIDS epidemic. The One marked the beginning of Elton John's remarkable reinvention as both an elder statesman of pop and a committed humanitarian.
