Data Insight

Breaking Hearts keeps the reunited John and Taupin partnership, with John on music and Bernie Taupin on lyrics for almost all tracks. Recorded with his classic touring band, it produced the US top-five hit Sad Songs (Say So Much).

Breaking Hearts is the eighteenth studio album by Elton John, released in June 1984 on Rocket Records and produced by Chris Thomas. Riding the commercial momentum of Too Low for Zero, the album debuted in the top five in both the UK and the United States and produced the hit singles 'Sad Songs (Say So Much)' and 'Passengers.' The record maintained the polished pop-rock sound that Chris Thomas had established on the previous album, with Taupin's lyrics taking a characteristically wry and bittersweet look at romance and emotional vulnerability. While not as strong as Too Low for Zero, the album demonstrated Elton's ability to sustain commercial output across successive records without a significant creative dip. Breaking Hearts is an enjoyable mid-period Elton John record that shows a master craftsman working confidently within his established strengths.
