By the Numbers
Authorship on This Is What I Live For runs almost entirely through Justin Furstenfeld, who wrote or co-wrote all thirteen songs and self-produced the album at the band's Up/Down Studio. His most frequent writing partner is engineer Eric Holtz, who shares the music credit on five tracks including 'Oh My My' and the closer 'Only Lost Is Found,' with Steve Schiltz of Longwave co-writing three, among them the title track. The band opens the writing out fully on 'Stay with Me,' credited to Justin and Jeremy Furstenfeld, Ryan Delahoussaye, Matt Noveskey, and Will Knaak. The lineup itself marks a change from earlier records: longtime guitarist C.B. Hudson had departed, so Will Knaak plays throughout, his first Blue October album on every track.
This Is What I Live For is the tenth studio album by American rock band Blue October, released October 23, 2020 on the band's own Up/Down and Brando labels. Frontman Justin Furstenfeld wrote or co-wrote every song and produced the record himself at the band's Up/Down Studio in Texas. The album is built around the core lineup of Justin Furstenfeld on lead vocals and guitar, his brother Jeremy Furstenfeld on drums, Matt Noveskey on bass, Ryan Delahoussaye on violin and keyboards, and Will Knaak on guitar, and it is the first Blue October album to feature Knaak playing on every track. Furstenfeld shares writing credits across the record with engineer Eric Holtz and with Steve Schiltz of Longwave, who also guests on the title track, while the whole band co-wrote 'Stay with Me.' The lead single 'Oh My My' reached the top ten at alternative rock radio, followed by 'Completely' and 'Moving On (So Long),' and the album peaked at number 19 on the US Top Rock Albums chart. It also features the recording debut of Justin's daughter Blue Reed Furstenfeld on 'Fight for Love,' and closes with 'Only Lost Is Found,' which samples Idaho's 'Live Today Again.'
