By the Numbers
Foiled is almost entirely the work of Justin Furstenfeld, sole or lead writer on every track and producer of the whole album alongside David Castell. He wrote 'Hate Me' by himself, and its confessional lyric about addiction and his mother is the emotional center of the record. A handful of songs add co-writers: 'You Make Me Smile' with bassist Matt Noveskey, 'She's My Ride Home' with several bandmates, 'Drilled a Wire Through My Cheek' with Patrick Sugg, and '18th Floor Balcony' with guitarist C.B. Hudson, whose legal name is Charles Britton Hudson III. Patrick Leonard produced '18th Floor Balcony,' the one track cut outside the Castell and Furstenfeld team.
Foiled is the fourth studio album by American rock band Blue October, released April 4, 2006 on Universal Records and the record that pushed the Houston group into the mainstream after more than a decade of work. It is the band's best-selling album, certified platinum in the United States by the RIAA in February 2007 for over one million copies shipped, and platinum in Canada. The lead single 'Hate Me' became the band's breakthrough hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and number 31 on the Hot 100, and the follow-up 'Into the Ocean' carried the album across rock and adult radio. Frontman Justin Furstenfeld wrote or co-wrote every song, drawing openly on his struggles with depression, addiction, and recovery. The album debuted at number 29 on the Billboard 200, the band's first chart entry, and remains their most popular release.
