Storm in the Heartland is Billy Ray Cyrus at his most hands-on as a writer to this point. He holds a co-writing credit on seven of the fourteen tracks, including 'Redneck Heaven,' 'Casualty of Love,' 'Roll Me Over,' 'Enough Is Enough,' and 'Geronimo,' and wrote 'The Past' entirely on his own. His most frequent partner is Don Von Tress, the writer of 'Achy Breaky Heart,' who appears on three of the co-writes. The rest of the album leans on outside Nashville songwriters, the clearest example being 'Only God Could Stop Me Loving You,' written by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange. The result is a split record, half Cyrus and his touring band, half professional song sourcing.
Storm in the Heartland is the third studio album by Billy Ray Cyrus, released November 8, 1994 on Mercury Records. Produced by Jim Cotton and Joe Scaife, it followed the massive success of his debut and its 'Achy Breaky Heart' single with a more traditional country sound. Cyrus co-wrote seven of the fourteen tracks, working with Nashville writers like Don Von Tress and members of his touring band, while outside songwriters supplied the rest, including Robert John 'Mutt' Lange's 'Only God Could Stop Me Loving You.' The title track and 'Deja Blue' were the singles, both charting modestly on the country chart as his commercial momentum cooled from its 1992 peak. The album reached number 11 on the Top Country Albums chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA.
