By the Numbers
Shot Full of Love is a pure interpreter's record. Billy Ray Cyrus, who had written or co-written material on his earlier albums, holds no writing credit anywhere on this one; all eleven songs come from professional Nashville writers. The credit column reads like a Music Row roster, with Bob DiPiero appearing on two tracks ('Under the Hood' and 'Give My Heart to You'), Bob McDill supplying the title song, and veterans like Al Anderson, Walt Aldridge, Rick Giles, and Susan Longacre filling out the rest. The one insider presence is co-producer Keith Stegall, who co-wrote 'His Shoes' and 'The American Dream.' The result frames Cyrus strictly as a vocalist working outside-written radio country, with the songwriting and production handled entirely by hired hands.
Shot Full of Love is the fifth studio album by Billy Ray Cyrus, released November 3, 1998 on Mercury Nashville. It was his last record for the label and his most deliberately radio-focused country album to that point, cut with top Music Row session players and produced by John Kelton and Keith Stegall. Every song was supplied by outside Nashville writers, drawing on a deep bench that included Bob DiPiero, Bob McDill, Al Anderson, Walt Aldridge, and Susan Longacre, with producer Keith Stegall co-writing two tracks. The single 'Busy Man' returned Cyrus to the country Top Ten for the first time since 1993, peaking at number three, while 'Under the Hood' and 'Give My Heart to You' rounded out the singles run. The album reached number 32 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and sold over 220,000 copies before Cyrus moved to Monument Records.
