By the Numbers
The Car loosens the sole-author grip of the previous record: Alex Turner still writes most of it, but three tracks add co-writers, with Jamie Cook on "Sculptures of Anything Goes" and touring guitarist Tom Rowley on two more. The composer column reflects that, listing Turner alone on most songs and his collaborators by name where they appear, a small reopening of the band's songwriting after Turner's solo turn on Tranquility Base.
The Car is the seventh studio album by Arctic Monkeys, released in October 2022 on Domino. It continued the orchestral, cinematic direction of its predecessor but pulled it back toward the full band, layering lush string arrangements over funk and baroque-pop grooves. Alex Turner wrote most of the album, with co-writes from Jamie Cook and the band's touring guitarist Tom Rowley. James Ford produced and wrote the string arrangements with Bridget Samuels. The album reached number one in the UK, the band's seventh consecutive chart-topper.
