The Authorship Story

Data Insight

Arctic Monkeys are an Alex Turner project in authorship terms. He wrote nearly every lyric in the catalog, with only a handful of outside co-writers across seven albums. The early records split credit between Turner's lyrics and a collective band music credit, so the composer column lists all four members by legal name. From Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino onward Turner takes sole writing credit, the strongest single-author pattern in the band's history, before reopening slightly to co-writes on The Car.

The Story

Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002. Frontman Alex Turner writes the band's songs and sings lead, joined by guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders, and bassist Nick O'Malley, who replaced founding bassist Andy Nicholson in 2006. They broke through with demos shared free online and a debut album that became the fastest-selling in British chart history. Across seven studio albums the band moved from fast garage-rock to desert rock, sleek R&B-tinged rock, and orchestral lounge-pop. Turner is the sole or primary writer throughout, which places the band high on the songwriting authorship scale, with the early records carrying a collective band music credit and the later ones written by Turner alone.
