By the Numbers
Rivers Cuomo wrote every song on the 2001 Green Album and reunited with Blue Album producer Ric Ocasek for a deliberately compact, hook-driven comeback after Weezer's five-year hiatus. Reacting against the exposed vulnerability of Pinkerton, Cuomo wrote tightly formatted power-pop songs that mostly run under three minutes and keep their lyrics generic and reserved. The album's brevity, barely 28 minutes, was a conscious songwriting choice, with Ocasek again favoring clean, efficient arrangements. The approach gave Weezer two enduring radio hits in 'Hash Pipe' and 'Island in the Sun.'
The Green Album ended a five-year gap when DGC put it out in May 2001, and it opened at number four on the Billboard 200 with 215,000 copies before reaching 1.6 million sold in the US. Rivers Cuomo wrote all ten songs, Blue Album producer Ric Ocasek came back for it, and the whole record runs 28 minutes.
