By the Numbers
SZNZ: Summer is the second of Weezer's four 2022 SZNZ EPs, a seasonal series loosely tied to Vivaldi's The Four Seasons with each entry given a distinct mood and sound. Rivers Cuomo, the band's chief songwriter, pitched Summer around youthful indignation and described the sound as 21st century 90s, returning to the punchy, guitar-forward power-pop and alternative-rock that defined Weezer's early hits, with heavier riffs in places. The EP was produced by Daniel Omelio (Robopop), giving it a brighter, more energetic edge than the acoustic Spring installment. 'Records' served as the single, leading the EP's upbeat tone.
Part two of SZNZ landed on the summer solstice, June 21, 2022, and turned the project toward heavy metal after the folk-leaning Spring. Rivers Cuomo wrote all seven songs on his own except the single "Records," which he shares with Sam Hollander and Grant Phillip Michaels.
