Rivers Cuomo wrote all ten songs on Weezer's 1994 debut, three of them with drummer Patrick Wilson, sketching the band's geek-rock identity through tightly constructed pop-punk built on crunching guitars and layered harmonies. Ric Ocasek of the Cars produced the record, smoothing Cuomo's songs into radio-ready power pop without sanding off their nervous energy. Cuomo's confessional bent surfaces most clearly on 'Say It Ain't So,' a song about his stepfather's alcoholism that he wrote and arranged himself. The result paired catchy melodies with first-person vulnerability, a template the band would push much further next time out.
Weezer's debut came out on DGC in May 1994, peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, still the band's best seller. Rivers Cuomo wrote all ten songs, sharing three of them with drummer Patrick Wilson, and the Library of Congress added the record to the National Recording Registry in 2026.
