Rivers Cuomo wrote all of Maladroit and Weezer self-produced it, recording quickly and famously workshopping songs with fans on message boards during the sessions. Released barely a year after the Green Album, it pushes a heavier, more guitar-driven sound, leaning into hard rock riffs and solos while keeping Cuomo's power-pop instincts intact. The fast, fan-involved process gave the record a looser, rawer feel than its predecessor. Singles 'Dope Nose' and 'Keep Fishin'' carried that crunchier approach to modern rock radio.
Maladroit came out on Geffen in May 2002, a year after the Green Album, and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 152,000 copies. The band self-funded and produced it while the label knew nothing about the sessions, and Rivers Cuomo, who wrote all thirteen songs, mailed eight of them to radio stations before any single was issued.
