Data Insight

Hurley continued the outside-collaborator approach but pointed it toward songwriters rather than pop producers. Rivers Cuomo co-wrote nearly every track with established names: Ryan Adams on 'Run Away,' Mac Davis on 'Time Flies,' Linda Perry on 'Brave New World,' and Desmond Child on 'Trainwrecks.' Additional co-writers included Dan Wilson, Greg Wells, Rick Nowels, Tony Kanal, and Jimmy Harry. It was also Weezer's first album for the independent punk label Epitaph after years on Geffen.

Frequently Asked Questions Hurley

Who wrote the songs on Weezer's Hurley?
Rivers Cuomo co-wrote nearly every track, frequently pairing with well-known outside songwriters. Ryan Adams, Mac Davis, Linda Perry, and Desmond Child each share a writing credit on the album. Additional collaborators included Dan Wilson, Greg Wells, Rick Nowels, Tony Kanal, and Jimmy Harry.
Why is Hurley named after a Lost character?
The album cover is a close-up photo of actor Jorge Garcia, who played the character Hurley on the television series Lost. The band chose the image partly as an inexpensive cover concept after signing to a smaller label. The title simply matches the photo on the front.
Which outside songwriters co-wrote Hurley?
Ryan Adams co-wrote 'Run Away,' Mac Davis co-wrote 'Time Flies,' Linda Perry co-wrote 'Brave New World,' and Desmond Child co-wrote 'Trainwrecks.' Dan Wilson, Greg Wells, Rick Nowels, Tony Kanal, and Jimmy Harry contributed to other tracks. Rivers Cuomo wrote the lead single 'Memories' and 'Unspoken' on his own.
How did Memories by Weezer perform on the charts?
'Memories,' the lead single, reached number 21 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. It did not enter the Billboard Hot 100. The song also charted on the Hot Rock Songs listings.
What was significant about Hurley's record label?
Hurley was Weezer's first album released through Epitaph Records, the independent punk label co-founded by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz. This was a notable departure from the band's longtime major-label home at Geffen. The move reflected a more stripped-down, independent phase for the band.
When was Hurley released?
Hurley was released in September 2010 on Epitaph Records. It debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 with around 45,000 copies sold in its first week. It was Weezer's eighth studio album.
