By the Numbers
Tyler, the Creator wrote, produced, and arranged Cherry Bomb almost entirely himself under his Odd Future imprint, with Mike Einziger of Incubus contributing additional instrumentation. The record swings between abrasive, distorted cuts and lush neo-soul and funk arrangements, a deliberate stylistic whiplash Tyler engineered as the sole creative architect. Guest vocals come from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, ScHoolboy Q, and Charlie Wilson across the 'Smuckers' and 'Fucking Young / Perfect' sequences, but the songwriting and production direction remain Tyler's throughout.
Cherry Bomb is the fourth studio album by Tyler, the Creator, released on April 13, 2015 through Odd Future Records. Self-produced with additional work from Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger, the record pushes Tyler's sound toward noisy, experimental hip-hop and R&B, with standout tracks "Deathcamp," the title song, and "Smuckers." Its guests include Kanye West, Lil Wayne, ScHoolboy Q, Charlie Wilson, Pharrell Williams, and Kali Uchis. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 with 51,000 first-week copies and was certified gold in the United States. Reviews were mixed on its abrasive mixing but praised Tyler's expanding ambition, making it a transitional record before his critical breakthrough.
