Tyler, the Creator wrote and produced every track on Bastard himself, recording it as a teenager and releasing it free in December 2009; sources differ on whether to call it a mixtape or his debut album, and Tyler himself referred to it as an album. The auteur control that would define his career is fully present here, from the beats to the bleak, confessional writing. Guest verses come from his Odd Future collective, including Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G, Casey Veggies, Brandun DeShay, Jasper Dolphin and Taco, with Syd the Kyd contributing.
Bastard is the debut project by American rapper Tyler, the Creator, self-released on December 25, 2009 through Odd Future. Produced entirely by Tyler using GarageBand and Logic, the record blends alternative hip-hop with horrorcore across tracks like "French!," "VCR," and the title song. It introduces the recurring character Dr. TC, a therapist figure who frames Tyler's introspection, and features early Odd Future members Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy, and Domo Genesis. Pitchfork later called it a minor masterpiece of shock art and ranked it among the year's notable releases. The project established Tyler's provocative voice and helped ignite the Odd Future collective's rise.
