Red is Taylor Swift's pivot from country toward pop, and she wrote or co-wrote all sixteen of its tracks. She brought in pop producers Max Martin and Shellback for the first time, alongside collaborators Ed Sheeran, Gary Lightbody, and Dan Wilson. Her first Billboard number one, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, came from these sessions.
Red is Taylor Swift's fourth studio album, released October 22, 2012, through Big Machine Records. Named for the emotional volatility of a destructive relationship, the album was her most eclectic production effort to date, blending country, pop, rock, and EDM-influenced production across its 16 tracks and enlisting collaborators including Max Martin, Shellback, Dan Wilson, Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, and Ed Sheeran. It was the first album since 2002 to sell over one million copies in a single week in the United States. The singles 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,' 'I Knew You Were Trouble,' and '22' drove massive mainstream pop crossover success, while 'All Too Well', originally here at five minutes, became Swift's longest number-one hit when re-released in a 10-minute version in 2021 as part of Red (Taylor's Version).
