Laundry Service was Shakira's first English-language album, and she co-wrote every track while learning to write directly in English. She handled lyrics and most music herself, producing alongside Tim Mitchell on 'Whenever, Wherever' and Lester Mendez on 'Underneath Your Clothes.' Gloria Estefan helped adapt lyrics on 'Whenever, Wherever' and 'Eyes Like Yours,' and Glen Ballard co-wrote 'The One,' but the songwriting voice stayed Shakira's own. The record kept her Andean and rock influences while pushing toward a crossover pop sound.
Laundry Service is Shakira's fifth studio album and her English-language debut, released November 13, 2001. It became the best-selling album by a female Latin artist at the time, with over 20 million copies sold worldwide. 'Whenever, Wherever' and 'Underneath Your Clothes' were global hits. Shakira co-wrote all tracks and employed rock and folk elements alongside her Latin pop sound. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album and established her as a mainstream global star.
