Gaia is the authorship outlier of Olivia Newton-John's career. Where nearly all her hits were written by outside songwriters and handed to her to interpret, here she wrote every song herself and co-produced the record, so her own name is the only writing credit across all twelve tracks. The material grew out of her 1992 breast cancer diagnosis and her environmental beliefs, making it her most direct and personal statement. It is the exact reverse of the outside-written pop machine that produced her biggest sellers.
Gaia: One Woman's Journey is the sixteenth studio album by Olivia Newton-John, released on 26 July 1994 on Festival Records. It is the one album in her catalog that she wrote entirely by herself, marking a full break from the outside-written pop that defined records like Physical and her early country-pop hits. She also co-produced the album with Murray Burns and Colin Bayley, giving her control over the material as well as the sound. The songs come directly from her life at the time, including her 1992 breast cancer diagnosis and her environmental convictions, with tracks such as 'Why Me' and 'Not Gonna Give into It' addressing her illness and recovery. The lead single 'No Matter What You Do' reached the Australian top forty, and the album is her most personal and self-authored statement.
