By the Numbers
2 is a duets record built almost entirely from new songs rather than remakes of Newton-John's catalog. The writing leans on outside hands: Diane Warren supplies 'I'll Come Runnin'' and 'I Will Be Right Here', while the Australian and American partners bring their own material, so Newton-John's own pen appears on only three tracks, 'Sunburned Country', 'Bad About You' and 'Act of Faith'. The one piece drawn from her own history is the closing samba version of 'Physical', written by Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick for her 1981 hit. Two tracks are effectively posthumous duets, layering her 2002 vocals over archive recordings of Peter Allen and Johnny O'Keefe.
2 is Olivia Newton-John's first duets album, released in Australia on 12 November 2002 through Festival Mushroom Records. Most of the eleven duets pair her with Australian artists including Keith Urban, Darren Hayes, Tina Arena, David Campbell, Human Nature, Billy Thorpe and Jimmy Little, alongside American guests Richard Marx and Michael McDonald. Two tracks set her new vocals against archive recordings of artists who had died, Peter Allen on 'Tenterfield Saddler' and Johnny O'Keefe on 'I'm Counting on You'. The songs are mostly new material from outside writers, with Diane Warren contributing two and Newton-John co-writing three, and the set closes with a samba reworking of her 1981 hit 'Physical'. Produced mainly by Charles Fisher, the album reached number five on the ARIA chart and was certified platinum in Australia.
