By the Numbers
John Farrar controls this record. He produced and arranged every track, wrote the title song alone, co-wrote 'Compassionate Man' with Chris Christian and 'Sam' with Hank Marvin and Don Black, and wrote 'Love You Hold the Key' with Newton-John herself, her one writing credit on the album. Everything else comes from outside writers, drawn heavily from Farrar's Shadows circle: Bruce Welch and Hank Marvin supply 'A Thousand Conversations,' Welch and Alan Tarney supply 'Hey Mr. Dreammaker.' Newton-John writes almost nothing here and sings all of it, so the album reads as a producer's showcase built around her voice.
Don't Stop Believin' is the seventh studio album by Olivia Newton-John, released on 30 October 1976 through MCA Records. John Farrar produced and arranged the entire record, and it was cut in April and May 1976 at Creative Workshop in Nashville with a core of session players. Farrar also wrote the title track on his own and had a hand in three more songs, so his name runs through the album as both producer and writer. The rest of the material comes from outside writers, among them the Shadows' Bruce Welch and Hank Marvin, Alan Tarney, and lyricist Don Black. It reached number 33 on the Billboard 200, topped the Adult Contemporary chart with its lead single, and was certified Gold in the United States.
