Dark Horse pairs Nickelback's self-written songs with the production of Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who also took co-writing credits on several tracks, his first major collaboration with the band. It produced the top-ten ballad "Gotta Be Somebody" alongside party-rock singles like "Burn It to the Ground." The band wrote the album with Lange's input, and it won Rock Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.
Dark Horse came out on Roadrunner on November 19, 2008 and put the band in a room with Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, who produced it alongside Nickelback and Joey Moi and took a music credit on five of the eleven tracks. Eight singles were pulled from it, led by 'Gotta Be Somebody' at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The RIAA certified it platinum three weeks after release and 3x platinum by 2010, and Music Canada has it at 9x platinum. 'Burn It to the Ground' was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
