By the Numbers
Twang is where George Strait's authorship finally appears in the data. After decades of recording other writers, he co-wrote four of these thirteen tracks, almost all with his son Bubba Strait and Dean Dillon, including the number one 'Living for the Night.' The rest are still outside songs and the closer 'El Rey' is a Jose Alfredo Jimenez cover, so the album sits at the start of his late writing turn rather than a full break from the song-picker model.
Twang is the twenty-fifth studio album by George Strait, released in 2009 on MCA Nashville and produced with Tony Brown. It debuted at number one on the all-genre Billboard 200 and was certified gold. The album marks a shift in his authorship: for the first time he co-wrote several tracks, mostly with his son Bubba Strait and longtime writer Dean Dillon, including the number one single 'Living for the Night.' He still recorded plenty of outside songs, and closed with a cover of the Mexican standard 'El Rey.' The record showed Strait beginning to put his own pen to work late in his career.
