By the Numbers
Pure Country is the best-selling record of George Strait's career and he wrote none of it. As a film soundtrack recorded entirely by Strait, it leans on film composer Steve Dorff, who wrote or co-wrote four tracks including 'I Cross My Heart' and 'Heartland,' alongside Jim Lauderdale. The biggest commercial success of his catalog is also one of its clearest examples of the singer as pure interpreter.
Pure Country is the soundtrack to George Strait's 1992 film of the same name and functions as a studio album, released on MCA Records. Recorded entirely by Strait, it became the best-selling album of his career, certified six times platinum. It produced 'I Cross My Heart,' a Steve Dorff and Eric Kaz song that became one of his signature ballads, and 'Heartland,' the film's theme. Strait wrote none of the eleven tracks, with film composer Steve Dorff and writer Jim Lauderdale supplying much of the material. The record marked the start of his long production partnership with Tony Brown.
